Breather

I've got a little breather. My mother has gone to visit relatives for a week. I love her dearly but I'm a product of that sandwich generation -- I still have a child at home (who, at almost 17 should be driving but is not) and then an 84 year old mother, who has, for all practical purposes, become my 5th (3 actual children, one husband) child. When she's out-of-town, it's like a mini-vacation for me. She'll also be going out to visit my brother (in Arizona) this month (two breaks for me in one month is unheard of!!) I had hoped for at least two weeks on her visit out there but I got 10 days. I guess beggars can't be choosers. As she ages, she is leaning on me for more and more. There was a reason I didn't become a nurse or a teacher -- I don't have the patience or desire to deal with needy people. But I will because I have no choice. She is my mother and I will take care of her. But I may go bonkers in the process. Anybody else out there who's being sandwiched?

  1. There's a whole lot of us out there sandwiched. We lost my father last year and my siblings and I have been caring for my Mom both mentally and physically since then. She has developed all kinds of health problems and it seems that that's all she can talk about. I understand how you are feeling and my Mom doesn't even live with me. Check out http://www.genwich.com. There are articles and links for resources that can help you cope and get the help it sounds like you need caring for your Mom. Good luck with your sandwich!

  2. I started not to post about this situation (I rant all the time on my forum but not in a public section) because there's a certain amount of guilt that goes on when you're just sick and tired of dealing with such things -- I'm glad I posted, though, and will check out your blog -- thanks!!
