Where did it go?

Last year, June 14 was on a Saturday and we were in full throttle. It was my eldest daughter's wedding day -- it's really hard to believe a whole year has gone by. I probably remember more about that day than Shannon does -- just as my own mother probably remembers more about my wedding day than I do. It's just the way it is -- so much is going on -- from last minute stuff that isn't quite right (we fortunately had very little of that), to appointments at the hairdressers, to trying to beat the heat however we could (like standing over the small fan that I took to the church for just that purpose.)

It was the the wedding of "our" dreams. Shannon was never a bridezilla; I was not a momzilla. We pretty much laughed our way through a year of preparations and, when the day arrived, we just got down to the business of enjoying ourselves. What I remember most about that day was that the people who were really important to us were all there -- some relatives, some friends. I had so many people say afterward that they felt as if they were just sharing a good time with good friends -- and that's what we wanted. The other thing which was really special was that we had a full commumion -- not just for the bride and groom but for everybody in attendance -- and Shannon and Greg served it. The whole day was a blessing and, at the end of it, the old cliche was absolutely true -- I had not lost a daughter, I had gained a son.

Am I ready to do it again? No. I hope a few more years go by before I'm mother of the groom. And, a few more than that before I'm mother of the bride again. But, at least, next time, I'll be ready.

Except weddings are probably like your children -- each one is different -- and whatever you think you know you might as well forget.

  1. Happy anniversary to your beautiful daughter.

I have 2 daughters but was spared the experience of planning a big wedding. Daughter #1 was married at home with just family there. Daughter #2 had a little more - she was married at the top of a hotel here in Atlanta and had family and a couple of friends there. She planned the whole thing, including getting a gown (she rented it!), in 3 weeks and the only thing that went wrong was the judge who was performing the ceremony fell that morning and broke her leg. She did get us another judge though.

  2. As I always told Shannon (and my other children), it's not the wedding that's important, it's the marriage. To be honest, I have no idea how much we ended up spending but it wasn't as much as some folks do, I know that -- and it was sweet -- so I'm happy with how it turned out. However, if she'd said she wanted a small wedding with family and a few friends -- or if she'd eloped and told me about it later -- I'd have been fine with that, too!
