Mike Huckabee in Augusta, GA

Was thrilled this morning to get a chance to meet Mike Huckabee at a booksigning at Barnes & Noble this morning. There were some 500 people in line -- we were numbers 288-290 -- we got to him at 8:45! There was no time for really personal photos or for one-on-one time with him -- just enough to say "glad to meet you" and for him to say "thanks for coming out" -- and we got to shake his hand! If you'd like to see a few more photos, go here.

  1. I love it! You know that Huckabee has in part redeemed the image of Southern Baptist Pastors, and there are so many of them who are really good guys despite the ones who make you get a little nauseous to be around them.

Hopefully that doesn't give offense if you happen to be Southern Baptist. BTW, I was raised Southern Baptist and have quite a few relatives who are pastors in that denomination.

  2. I know exactly what you mean and I agree. I also was raised in the Southern Baptist church -- I only switched to Methodist because our kids were in a Mother's Morning Out program at a Methodist church down the street -- and when we decided we needed to get our children in Sunday School, it just made sense to go somewhere familiar. The only quibble I have with the Baptist church is that they don't allow women to be pastors. The thing I like best about the Methodist church is that it is "all-inclusive" -- anybody can take communion.

  3. I totally understand.

What I love is that we are living in an age when denominational barriers are coming down. Hallelujah! I love that you can't always tell what kind of church it's going to be strictly by the name on the door. In other words, you really have to get to know people and can't just assume what they believe.

The irony of my situation is that I swore when I was in my early 20s that I didn't want anything to do with an institutional church again and least of all the Southern Baptists -- even though there were many in that denomination whom I knew well and loved well. But the Lord had other plans.

After close to 20 years out of the SBC, I've now been a member of an SBC church for almost 12 years. I laugh to myself about that, but I also know that it's not really like the SBC churches I knew as a kid. I grew up in Dallas, so you can just imagine how that was. This is nothing like that. LOL!

Anyway, I think that's cool you got to meet Mike Huckabee, and I enjoyed seeing your pictures.

  4. I wouldn't rule out going to a Baptist church again, at some point in the future. I mean churches are like everything else -- I'm not going to agree with every single thing -- it's like voting -- you vote for the candidate that comes closest to how you believe -- but you're not going to like everything (and when people say they do, I raise an eyebrow -- well, if I could raise an eyebrow...). Anyway, I know people can worship even if they never set foot inside a church but there's something to be said about being with people who believe the same things as you do.

  6. Yeah, I don't think there'll ever be a politician who I'll agree with 100% -- I always wonder about folks who think every single thing a particular politician says or does is wonderful.

  7. Oh I wish I had known he was there! I would have loved to have met him!!

On a different note, I went to your Yuku site and tried to set up my own but somehow it added your name into my address. Working on getting it fixed now! Lol!

  8. Do you mean you tried to register? If you register on a specific board, that's what it does -- you'll have your username plus the name of that board. To have a username which you can use on all Yuku boards (without the extra name), you have to register on the Yuku main site. A nuisance but I didn't make those rules! Anyway, I have some instructions -- about that and some other things --down in the FAQ section (on the board) if anybody needs them.
